Yesterday I went to the local farmers co-operative to by some Gallup 360 (Roundup) and was told that from November anyone using a sprayer (even a small one) will have to go on a course. Whatsmore they will have to furnish their certificate before they can buy anything that is to be applied by spray. New EEC regulations.

And around here 14/15 year olds are driving enormous tractors complete with slurry tanks and silage trailers on the narrow roads and going so fast they haven't a chance of stopping in an emergency.

It's a daft old world.

We should do what the French have been doing for ages. - just ignore the regulations which don't suit them!

I doubt whether anybody, since the EU's first legislative powers were brought into being, has had the resilience to make a totally comprehensive list of all the daft laws which have been passed in the name of the citizens of the various countries they are supposed to represent.

If I have to be ruled by politicians who have no idea of the consequences of many of their decisions on those who have to implement them or be affected by them , I would rather be ruled by those living in my own country where at least they have a greater chance of being confronted and challenged by those they have upset !

Well said Primrose, I'm in total agreement with you (and even Nigel could not have put it better).

If this is the case Gerry I will just have to stock up (as I have done in the past with many other items such as creosote etc.) as this would be yet another stupid unwanted regulation. Regarding the tractors, I take the point and don't want to sound too pedantic but unless the laws have changed you have to be over 13 years of age to drive a tractor on the land but over 16 and passed a tractor test to drive on the road. These rules were sensible when tractors were the size they were at the time but now as you suggest they are absolute juggernauts that travel at much higher speeds.

Oh you'll all have to forgive my being a grumpy old woman. I seem to get worse as I get older and today's birthday.has merely added an extra layer of grumpy icing onto the birthday cake!

Joking apart, do our legislative processes really seem to be getting worse and more silly or it the case that does age really bring more wisdom (or cynicism?). One only has to look at the excuses claimed by almost every organisation in the country hiding behind the so called provisions of the Data Protection Act to wonder why we put up with some of this nonsense!
