Rescuing leggy tomatoes

Can you snap off the tops of leggy tomatoes, put them in water or damp compost and get them to grow into new more vigorous plants , in the same way that you would do with side shoots? I have some plants from a later sowing but am just curious to know if this works and if you get quicker results than resowing?

They do usually root easily if you break them off, or you can plant them nice and deep and they put out roots from the stem that is underground and then the stem thickens up and generally makes a nice strong plant.

Yes, I would recommend the deep planting. I've done just that today. Don't know why but they all seem to have shot up in the last few days.

I find that the setting of the first truss usually fattens the stems up and leggy ones will sort themselves out ,its the ones that have a blueish tinge that dont grow well usually got to cold when they are very small other people may disagree but thats my experience
