worms in the floods

Was pondering on the fate of worms and other creepy crawlies when the fields get flooded. There's so much saturated ground - so where do they go? Do they die? What will happen to the gardens, etc. when the water subsides and there are no helpful bugs and beasties around?

I think everything rises to the surface or moves sideways out. When the fields around us were up to saturation point but not with standing water there were flocks of hundreds of rooks all feeding on the fields and I know they love leatherjackets and are probably not adverse to worms either. I was looking around for Alfred Hitchcock and a film crew!

Amendment to the post above... a parliament of rooks! Not a flock....
