I,ve just planted some onions sets and garlic cloves and have always wondered whether the size (or lack or it) of onion sets and garlic cloves determines the size of the new plants they produce.
I always plant my biggest onion sets first believing they will,produce the biggest onions but given they're all planted in the same conditions I wonder whether this is actually true. In the past I,ve had some onion sets which have been so tiny that I've wondered whether they're actually worth planting but have never kept a note of which ones they were so have never been able to put my theory to the test.

With onion sets that are planted in the spring, the smaller ones give better results I think. The larger ones are far more likely to bolt given half a chance. This may or may not be so for overwintered onions.
I don't know what the knowledge is on garlic cloves.
