I have picked a lot of my ripening outdoor tomatoes now rhe nights are cooling and am storing them temporarily on layers of newspaper on trays untill I can peocess them but find they have attracted an infestation of fruit flies which seem either to have migrated from the fruit bowl or visa versa. They are driving me mad. Whatcan I do to get rid of them or more importantly avoid the problem when I pick the remainder of my tomatoes? I am rinsing them gently before I lay them out on the trays.

I'm leaving mine on the plants at the moment as they will attract fruit flies if laid out. The only thing I think you could try is to cover them with some fine net, like old net curtains maybe?
