My son dug out some rocket potatoes for me today a poor crop and what was there half had a split half way through what would have caused them to split?, Its my first time growing rocket and my last time.

Irregular watering is usually the cause of splitting. I'm sorry that Rocket has not come up to scratch for you. It is a variety that I've never rated, most especially because it cooks poorly, lacking substance. Of early varieties I prefer Foremost, or Duke of York — reliable and tasty. You might find Carlingford to work best for you if you are looking at harvesting new potatoes in late summer into autumn. They are the variety of choice for this purpose.
