One of the lads on the allotment has new blackberry canes growing flat for some reason this year. It's a thornless but no idea as to the name. Well established he has had it for several years and not had any problems before. Fruits very well. But will it next year on these weird looking canes.

Would be grateful for any advice as to why this has happened ,or if he should cut them out and miss out on his fruit next year.

The problem is called fasciation but I can't find out much about it in blackberries - here is an American mention but not much help.

Thornless berries tend to produce these fasciated growths. It's best to look out for them as they emerge in the spring, and then remove them to favour properly-formed shoots. They can be removed now, it's not too late.
