Both last year and this year I sowed fennel, last year by accident I sowed herb fennel and got some nice roots. This year I sowed Florence and didn't get one root. I just uprooted the lot and put it through the garden grinder.

In both cases it was Johnsons seeds, or is that Johnstones. They do paint.

I'm not growing bush beans again, even though I did get a crop both years my dog has managed to cause a lot of damage getting at them so it's climbing beans next year.

Climbing French beans ?

This years sowing included a yellow pod type, I didn't enjoy eating them like the green beans I got from Moles. The yellow podded plants grew far to tall for the strength of the root and supporting branches.

I'm learning.

i grew purple bush beans this year (seeds of italy) they seem to go to seed very quickly, whereas my neighbour grew yellow ones and they stayed tender and slim however large they got. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good green bush bean variety that I could try as the yellow ones, although pretty, prolific and have good longevity, they look so insipid on the plate

I have grown Primavera from D T Brown for the first time this year and am very impressed. The beans are slim, straight, very tasty and are certainly prolific - I have already frozen lots from just a dozen plants, as well as eating lots of them fresh.

I can recommend Slenderette from Organic Gardening. Grown it for a few years now and always gives me a good crop and nice round, slim beans.

Just taken the first lot of manure up to the allotment ready for autumn digging, it's at times like this that I wish I wasn't at the top of the hill...
Tell me, why do they put entrances at the bottom of a hill?

Molly and I had bramble-berries for our evening snack yesterday, she's only little. On her hind legs balancing and snuffling from one to the other to get a ripe one.

Round the edges of the fields where the sun is for most of the day I could have picked a bowl full, some as big a twenty pence piece.

Purple poo-poos this morning.

And she always manages an extra-cute look after being caught stealing, she follows me around everywhere when Mummy isn't home but when Mummy is home i'm extra to her requirements.

She's a little tart.
