Odd-shaped courgettes

One of my two courgette plants looks healthy with plenty of flowers, but about half the crop are distorted in that they have a huge "bulb" near the stem, tapering quickly to a thin, straggly weak-looking end about 4" long. Too much water, not enough? Any suggestions welcome!
Thanks, John N

Are these the first fruits of the season? If so, I think what you're seeing is "first courgette of the season syndrome". I find that the first few fruits to form are always a bit below standard, a bit like the first pancake out of the pan. Later fruits ought to improve. You can still eat these early attempts: just cut the manky bit off when you prepare them

Not pollinated. As Felix says, they will improve.
