Many years ago my wife and I spent holidays with friends in the Canary Islands. Their next door neighbour, Bill Kissack, had a total hydroponic garden. We had dinner with them eating only veg grown in "soil" from the local volcano - and very tasty food it was, too! A can't remember how he fertilised it all, but the garden didn't "smell", so I suspect it was artificial fertiliser. It might not have been as expensive as it would be today - Bill was manager of the island's Esso establishment, so there may have been a bit of barter going on!
Best of luck with the project.
