Interesting day yesterday.
Tuesday morning the farmer across the river brought down two wagon loads of stone and tipped them on the river bank. It seemed wise to keep an eye on this suspicious development yesterday; and, sure enough, at breakfast time a gang of men turned up with digger and cement mixer and timber and got to work. They were building some sort of dam across the river downstream from us.
Having had the river through our field twice this winter, this was not a welcome sign. But a call to an extremely helpful and concerned Environment Agency Wales resulted in some action. They left the work to continue for the rest of the morning, then turned up in the afternoon, read the riot act and told the gang to remove everything. By late afternoon the river looked as though nothing had happened.
And I assume the farmer has been left with a warning from the EAW, if not a threat of prosecution, and a large bill from the contractor.
I slept well last night :)

Good morning Alan,
Well done!
We have been suffering from local flooding leaving me effectively on an island for a very long time and this was caused by The Rivers Authority placing a weir in the river Teme which they had adamantly refused to listen to any argument put to them to remove or reposition the said weir.
Last year the Authority was threatened with a legal action from local residents and the weir was removed and replaced down river where it didn't cause the road flooding. The resulting havoc is that the weir caused the river to take a new course and is now threatening properties not with just flooding but the properties total destruction. Had they placed the new weir the other side of the local village there would be a distance of nearly 20 miles of low grade farmland which would have maybe flooded before the town of Ludlow.
I appreciate that this is the reverse of your case but it goes to demonstrate that rivers are things that should not be meddled with by anybody. They are a force of nature which at the best of times is unpredictable.
Locally a rather large housing association estate was built and the run off into the local brook which simply could not cater for it and resulting in around 300 acres of prime farmland being not only ruined but the erosion caused flooding all over the district. The local brook became totally choked but the Environment Agency will not allow the brook to be dredged. This is an ongoing battle and shortly there is to be a judicial review on the matter. With last years rainfall you would have thought that reason would have prevailed but to Authorities and Agencies the local population have no say and protests mean nothing to deaf ears!

Good result Alan. It just shows how vigilant you have to be on these issues. Hopefully the Environment Agency will now be keeping an eye on this individual and paying him the odd unnanounced visit to ensure that he's behaving himself.

Beware the slurry spreader unless the officials kept your name out of it.

No problem; it can't negotiate the 45 degree sloping river bank and throw across the river :P
