I have been having trouble sleeping, I suffer from fybromyalgia, so I have many nights when I cant sleep. I am up and down, usually from 2pm. This morning I started from 3.30 and then eventually got up at 4.30. It was snowing at 11pm and all night and all day today, Our road was blocked for sometime this morning till some started driving up and down. We walked over to my MIL about two miles away from us to check her and the snow was quite deep. But the worst thing was that we called at our allotment to brush the snow off the polytunnel only to find that the bl***y pidgeons have eaten my purple sprouting broccoli, curly kale AND Tuscan Kale, I am so upset. I took the covers off the PSB because they were getting too tall. Mmm wont make that mistake again.

Catherine, how disappointing, when you have brought on and nurtured something so long and then the greedy pigeons destroy it all.

We went to the allotment this morning (having to fight our way through 4 foot high drifts to get there) in order to shake the snow off the brassica nets. Unfortunately, the weight of the snow had already brought it down, mainly by breaking the bamboo canes which held it up, and the bits of kale and sprouts which stuck through the net had been nibbled by pigeons. And all the unprotected brassicas of our allotment neighbour, including some lovely tall and staked purple sprouting broccoli, had all been eaten by the little blighters.

If you can still get a net on now, Catherine, you might be able to save some plants because they will throw out side shoots!

Yes the damned wood pigeons have eaten all my Cavalo nero and Curly Kale too which has been sprouting through the snow. I'm particularly annoyed because we spend a small fortune feeding the birds, putting out various foods so that there's something suitable for all of them, so I regard this as a blatant abuse of our hospitality.

Also noticed this morning that all my hardy endive seems finally to have surcombed to several night of successive sub zero temperatures. I was banking on that to see me through the next month in supplying salad leaves.

The ever increasing, troublesome deer, have managed to force their way into my protected Winter Green crops. It's amazing what damage they can do in one night.

Must be so tempting for them with the weather like this, i suppose..... :)

Sorry for the rest of you, though.
