Rockwool - any advice on what to do with it?

I have been growing 3 tomatoes in a hydroponic unit using rockwool cubes covered with clay granules. The root system is a solid mass.
Is it safe to remove as many clay granules as possible then shred the whole lot onto the compost heap rockwool and all?
