My Poor Garden

I called at my allotment yesterday. Because of our dreadful weather I have not been for almost a week. What a sad sight. The sharp frost last week has killed everything that should be still growing well. (this time last year it was warm and sunny, we were in the Cotswolds staying at a cottage with a swimming pool :D that had been put to bed for winter :( and we just had to stare at the covered pool and sit in 70 degrees of heat.) Our Courgettes, dwarf beans, lettuce, cucumbers have all gone.

Just wondering how everyone else have managed. Or have you not had any frost?

I feel for you Catherine. So far we've been lucky and haven't had any frosts - long may that continue.

We have had two sharp frosts, Catherine, which killed off the last courgettes and the French beans. On the runner beans, the outer leaves were frosted but the beans closer to the poles survived, though they have now finished as well.

Our problem has been the recent rains. Although our allotment is usually well drained, the sheer amount of water recently has made everything sodden. The forecast for tomorrow and Sunday is good, so we are planning to dig out the calabrese, last (split!) cabbages and last kohlrabi which has gone to seed. Then, hopefully, we'll be able to dig some more.

One possible problem ahead: we have found roe deer droppings on the allotment!
