.... and they surprised me too, the first time I picked a home grown cucumber 4 years ago ...... :D Never knew cucumbers were a prickly fruit :shock: !

Also the thickness of the skin has surprised them as well but well worth it in terms of taste. :D

So what was your first surprise in terms of veg growing?

I think some of the mini cucumbers can turn out to be prickly, not sure why because mostly mine have been smooth skinned. . I was surprised to discover the difference in taste & texture when biting into them because they are crisp and crunchy, and nothing like the 'nothingness' of eating a supermarket purchased cucumber.

Surprises for me in the early days of veg growing was how a small courgette could turn into a jumbo marrow almost overnight, the amount of space needed to grow winter squash, and the fact that it hot weather lettuce seeds will not germinate (I'd assumed that the warmer the weather was, the more they would like it and the quicker they would germinate !).
