As this is by far the hottest forum on the KG site, it's come to my attention that it's getting a little confusing for new posters (and some of the old ones!)


This is still for any topics you want to talk about, gardening or otherwise, but could I gently remind people to stick to the topic that you're answering!

Otherwise, all it takes is one flippant remark and what starts off as a perfectly sensible question ends up with 8 pages of one-line quips about sprout wine!

Of course, if you want to talk about sprout wine... start a new discussion about it!

He's right you know, having checked this up on the search, we've managed to bring the subject of sprout wine into no less than 21 different threads.

I agree with your suggestion, so you are saying if we want to start one on the world cup, or the popularity of Monty D or Terry Wogand et al, we do it in this section and leave it out of a thread on say.........'peas eaten by mice' ??

If you follow any conversation whether online or the 'real world' you will find thet it drifts naturally from one topic to another, it's just the way things are. I can't see how laying down a rule can stop this. Phrases such as 'oh, by the way' or 'that reminds me' are commonplace.

Folk put a posting in a particular section to get an answer, if someone then goes from broad beans to the world cup or what ever, the poor so and so that put the posting on gets two replies on beans and fifteen on the world cup and the availability of duck eggs in Yorkshire, not always helpful for the uninitiated me thinks.

I know that it is a problem as I too have found that at times the search engine could not find the topic because the topic has changed from original, but I don't believe there is a simple answer. We are not machines, you can't change human nature with a set of rules. The modern tendency is to digitise everything into little boxes. How often have you filled in a questionnaire where you can't tick the YES or the NO box because neither fits.I spend a lot of time using search engines and it's very tricky to get the information you want. You can try all sorts of combinations of keywords and still not find it.Even the meaning of words changes and they mean different things to different people. Examples are album, gay, organic,cool, classic, film.

Allan, I think you're being over analytical of the subject. Threads do wander around a bit, that's the joy of a forum but what we've been asked to do is try to avoid the flippant remarks that knock the thread clean off course and into Grock's shed for another of Lizzie's tea parties. We are quite entitled to have another party at any time, so long as we go into Chatter and start a new thread on that subject rather than coming out of Best Practice on a thread about greens and diving straight into the sprout wine.

No one is asking us to take a topic and not mention another thing but that topic in one thread. What we are being asked to do is treat "serious" threads with some respect and save the fun for other "non-serious" threads.

It may be overanalytical in this context but it's bl00dy true and can't be said often enough IMO.

This sort of behaviour is deterring new contributors or should I say newbies requesting genuine advise.
