What a lovely photo! I suspect the recent warm & damp weather has bought her out of hibernation. Do you find many of them in your part of the world? How do you know she's a female by the way?

The males come down from the railway bank to mate & we've seen them doing that entwining thing to win the lady and they are much smaller. Our other big girl I posted the year before last had to be removed as she got too used to us and too bold and moved down to the front of the plot where children play. This one was very timid when she came out a few weeks ago but has found her spot and is settling in out of the way. No males have come down so I'm assuming she is young.

The other one is still in the little New Forest snake and amphipian centre near Lyndhurst I've been told, so she is nice and safe as well.

If you look at Westis photo you can see where the body ends and the tail begins. This is more difficult to spot on a male snake. Naturally, a male snake has a smaller bottom than a female

Pongeroon - I thought that was an injury to her tail - only showed up when I enlarged & cropped the photo. Glad that's normal as was wondering if she had been injured.
