I was hoping to plant the seed potatoes this weekend, when I went to check them I noticed that they had gone green will the new crop be safe to eat?.
I know that green potatoes are poisonous to eat.
I had them in a tray on a bench in the garage by a window not covered.

Dear Bren, they are absolutely fine to plant.

I think most seed potatoes will be slightly green by the time they have chitted, but since they normally seem to have a fair dusting of dusty soil, it doesn't often show.

I was just wondering if yours are fairly clean, so showing the green more?

In light potatoes go green, new or old.

Growing from a root underground there's no light, unless your earthing up (or mulching) was poor, so they don't grow green.
If uncovered then the bit in light goes green, the bit underneath doesn't.

Seed potatoes can go as green as they please, they'll have rotted away by the time you're harvesting your spuds.

Yes green spuds are mildly poisonous, been discussed a few times on here, I think the final word was along the li.es of uncomfortable but not dead.

Thanks OH and Peter that has made my mind easy, we are promised a fine day tomorrow my son will come and plant them for me.

OH I do pop in now and again to see what members are up to, I'm not confident enough to offer any advice to queries and when I have a question of my own I often find some one has asked the same question.
