One of the allotmenteers suggested I apply lime to the soil to break up the heavy ,wet ,never been planted before area I had set aside for my potatoes. This may have been well meaning but bad advice. Have just read you shouldn't plant potatoes in a newly limed area. If this is the case what veg group would be best planted in the limed spot?

It all depends on the pH of your soil. But brassicas are the veggies most planted with the addition of lime. Cheers, Tony.

Bad advice indeed, Veggie. Potatoes prefer a soil that is slightly acid or at most neutral. Alkaline soil will cause scabbing which is not fatal but makes the spuds look awful.

As Klefti says, brassicas respond well to lime.

If you want to break up the soil add as much organic matter as you can get your hands on.
