Isn't it a nice feeling to know that the shortest day has now passed?
Even if things are very slow to move in terms of seeing lighter nights and mornings, it's good to know that we're at least now moving in the right direction.

Actually I believe that the mornings continue getting a little darker for a brief while before things turn around but it's the thought that the shortest day is behind us that counts I suppose. Must go and pick some holly for my table decoration!
You will have to wait until Jan 5 I'm afraid Primrose until we begin to move in the 'right direction'. This is when the earth will finally complete its orbit (perihelion) and begin a new journey around the sun.

Another date to look forward to on the way to spring and starting a new growing year off. I love having these little goals seems to make the time go quicker.

"This year the earliest sunset was on 13th December (at about 15:51 here in Milton Keynes). The latest sunrise isn't until the 30th December (at about 08:11). Between these times both sunset and sunrise are getting later but at different rates, with the shortest day in the middle somewhere on the 22nd.
This is to do (as I understand it anyway) with the way our mean solar clock time shifts relative to the real sun, it it the same effect as the difference between sundial time and clock time, which is called the equation of time. In this odd period, real solar midday is still in the middle of the day, but the clock time is gaining slowly so that 12:00 on the clock is getting a bit earlier than the sun's peak."
the explanation is largly gibberish to me but and gives different dates to the earlier post..
