The issue of using peat, like so many things, became a bandwagon that far too many people jumped on without having any idea what they were doing. How many of them actually bothered to do any research or even give it more than a moments thought before screaming from the rooftops.
Personally I use very little peat, having a well established compost regime in place, but I do use some for cranberries, blueberries etc. and have no qualms about it. For commercial composts it probably is much overused but we need to educate gardeners and growers to produce their own composts so that commercial peat extraction can be minimized and only used where necessary.
I do have concerns about destruction of habitats but in the area where i live there are ongoing restoration projects which bring the lowland bogs back to a near natural state after peat extraction has finished.
A bit more thought and a bit less hysteria and the world might be a better place.

We seem to live in an era of hysteria don't we? I often wonder how much is created by people who have vested interests!
