Theres a big lighting show on in Frankfurt right now and loads of our members and colleagues are stuck there for the duration, but I can think of worse places to be marooned

I can't remember seeing volcanic dust before but I do recall one particular occasion years ago when there was a very violent sandstorm in the Sahara desert and we awoke in the morning to find our car, windows, (and washing which had been left out all night) totally covered in a layer of bright red sand. The automatic car washes did great business but I wasn't too pleased as I had to do a full wash all over again to get rid of all the stains.
We live under a flight path, so the complete lack of aircraft noise today has been a rare delight although I feel very sorry for everybody whose plans have been totally disrupted. I suppose we will never get to know all the personal little tragedies which have been caused by this, i.e. people having to fly somewhere for a relative's wedding, funeral, etc. I don't suppose any of the insurance companies will cough up either, using the usual get-out clause that it was "an Act of God".

As Primrose said - its almost weird to look up into a clear blue morning sky - and NOT see any contrails in the sky.
Couldn't smell anything odd in the air yet though - well apart from usual Lincolnshire scents!
On the downside, our friend & neighbour was due to fly back from 6 months in Afghanistan today, so not sure when he'll get in.

I seem to remember some correspondence on year about a year ago regarding a volcanic dust product which was supposed to add extra fertility to the soil. I wonder if anybody actually got round to giving it a trial?
If not, maybe if we all wait long enough we'll all get a thin free layer of it to trial as it slowly floats down from the atmosphere? I saw a photo on TV this morning of a property in Iceland with quite a thick coating of dust on the exterior surfaces. Looked just like some internal parts of our house when we have a run of good outdoor gardening days. At least I now have a legitimate excuse!

There are so many unknowns aren't there? I have spend the last 24 hours rescheduling car hire for clients who were to travel yesterday, today and tomorrow and may now travel on Sunday, or Monday or .... Who knows. My parents are stuck in Romania until Thursday when they were due back today...

It's not so good if you're a plane spotter either..
I did see an Augusta 119 helicopter go by yesterday...and a Piper Cherokee today....
It is certainly unusual not to see the West-East contrails...often you can count up to a dozen trails at any one time over here....USA/South America into Europe..and return..

I have just craned my neck skywards to watch a Czaw Sportscruiser fly around the town....in the lovely clear blue sky...seems it is registered in Sussex but shown for change of ownership so may be the new machine in town.??

By now we've had almost three days of blissful silence - not an aircraft in sight, and clear blue sky with no vapour trails; it's almost eerie. I'm starting to realise that I'm temporarily living in the quiet kind of world that my grandparents would have taken for granted when they were children.
I know we're getting volcanic dust pollution, but wonder how much carbon air pollution from aircraft has been reduced by the almost total shutdown of aircraft from the UK and much of northern Europe over this period?

Hi folks.
What surprises me are all those people moaning on about not being able to fly because they think that airlines are being OVER cautious. Can you imagine the commotion that would ensue IF there was a fatal crash ? Flippin' nitwits !
