Its amazing where plants manage to grow, and they play a huge role in cleaning up industrial spoil heaps.
When I was younger, before the clean air act came in, the local steel works in the bottom of the valley poured out huge amounts of smoke from all the various processes and one of the things was sulphur dioxide. It was very beneficial to the roses as we never had any black spot. Now with clean air the black spot is really bad, so it did have some advantages. The only other one I can think of was a plentiful supply of basic slag from the furnaces which was used for making paths as it set solid when you poured water on it after raking it smooth. It was probably full of heavy metals and other undesirables, but was widely used. A friend of mine actually worked in the wonderfully named Slag Reduction Company and had to say "Good morning, Slag Reduction" when she answered the phone.
