Asparagus in September?

We just bought some Asparagus labelled "Grown in the Wye Valley".

These were green but unlike the more usual stuff from Spring, these had very fat stems. When cooked, their coats stayed firm whilst the inside was pretty soft. The flavour was much milder than the Spring variety.

Can anyone advised if this is a specific Autumn variety (not seen it before in the UK, but maybe I'm just unobservant)?

Guess they tick the boxes for being "in season" and "low food miles" but I think on balance imported stuff from Peru would have more taste
