Plum Pudding - just make sure you don't leave any earth gaps around the edges of the paving slabs or the slugs and snails will have a field day in their new hidey holes. Perhaps sprinkle a few slug pellets around them to give them a Welcome To Your New Home party feast !

I have a real peeve about noise and it would be so much worse If I lived in the country as I love the sounds of nature. So, when I'm on the allotment, I like the tranquillity, the birdsong, bees buzzing and the grasshoppers zzzz-ing.

I used to work in Morrisons, where I was forced to listen to piped music for the entire eight hour shift. I could tune it out most of the time but after five hours, it was hard to do. So, I was particularly angry one sunny Sunday afternoon on the plot, when the two blokes on the next but one plot put their car radio/cd player on full pelt with the doors open, so they could hear it at the other end of their plot.
I marched round and unceremoniously told them to turn it down...I'm afraid I wasn't very polite either. I can't remember exactly what I said but it was something along the lines, that I had to listen to that crap all day at work, came here for peace and quiet and what made them think everyone else wanted to listen to their bloody music. They were so shocked they turned it off and apologised profusely.

Thanks Primrose, I've been quite liberal with the blue slug sweeties because I've just planted out the brassicas. In fact slugs and snails are still a huge problem even in dry weather.

Are there still grasshoppers? Not heard one for years, mind my hearing isn't that good must check with the wife.

No doubt he will have a perfectly good explanation when he returns. Perhaps he's one of these Secret Shoppers testing out the ratings of these different sun screen preparations they were talking about on BBC Breakfast this morning.

Elaine I thought it was just me, I hate noise especially music. I place it along with having to endure passive smoking as an affront to my well being. I also hate the continual banal background musak that has to now accompany the commentary on all TV documentaries. The twentieth century may have led to many advances in technology for our benefit but amplified and broadcast so called music is not one of them. Just think of what those people of normally quiet and peaceful Pilton are presently suffering thanks to the insistence of thousands to inflict their amplified pollution on their village. At least they know it will all return to tranquillity on Monday morning.

Another ranter here about background music to documentaries. Often it's so intrusive I can't properly hear what the narrator is saying snd it certainky doesn,t add to the quality of the programme. I don,t know whether one's hearing becomes more sensitive to this kind of noise intrusion as you get older but there are an awful lot of older people around who I know really HATE IT. I actually wrote to the BBC and complained about but never received a reply.. i wish somebody would invent some technology where you could turn the background music off .

I always take my solar radio to the lottie. I don't play it loud and I have it in the area I work. I can still hear the sounds of nature, but can't hear the loud conversations, the children screaming, the strimmers & mowers or the 4 x 4's going past dropping off the horse bedding - (with electric tilt trailers that whine), the fence post bangers etc

We are a big site so it makes a big difference to the noise level, not to mention a main road at the front and a train line at the back which is actually nice as quite often have the odd steam train or cargo train go by which is a good excuse to stop & stare!

Back to the radio - one other thing, I tend to work in relationship to type of music, so a morning of rock & roll gets a lot more achieved than a morning of love ballads!

No Barney, you are most certainly not on your own! And it's not just as I've got older either.... I have always objected to being a captive audience to other people's music for sure. As soon as we get a nice summer day, there is always some idiot who throws open their windows and turns their music up. grrrr.

Westi, Strimmers etc on the plot don't bother me...it has to be done, but I don't want music, though I have had my little radio on whilst working in the greenhouse sometimes.

Primrose, the ones which really annoy me on the TV are Natural History programmes that are accompanied by artificial sounds. There was a great one on last year, all about insects for a change and it was completely spoiled by them putting daft creaky noises etc whilst the critters walked or whatever. It was very clever but not necessary,in my humble opinion.
