The day started beautifully dry and sunny here, OH, but since lunch time it's been raining lightly and steadily. And it's quite warm, ideal for blight really.

We have no sign of blight yet on either potatoes or tomatoes which surprises me. The tomatoes are in the greenhouse but one of the plants is under one of the top ventilators and gets rained on quite regularly. So how are others faring on potatoes as well as tomatoes?

Dear Monika, i'm so pleased to hear your plot is blight free, and hope it stays that way for you.

Hi everyone, Well no blight here, plenty of rain and no gardening either for me. I somehow went over on my ankle on Sunday going down the steps and have a sprained right ankle and torn ligaments in my left knee. My foot is purple and yellow and too large to get my shoe on and my left knee is like a balloon. I'm hobbling about like a cross between Douglas Bader and a penguin.

We've three flights of steps into the bottom garden and two up to the hens in the orchard at the top so it's a bit of a challenge. I'm trying to be sensible and rest them while the swelling goes down, but must admit I got down to the greenhouse yesterday with the help of lots of strapping on and a walking stick. I'm not trying it again today - very painful.

I'll have to wait until the weekend for hubby to pick everything and just hope nothing is wasted. I'm bored stiff already.

Hi all,

Getting fed up with all this hot sunny weather down here :) When it has rained lately, it's never been enough. All my potatoes are in compost bags, as the veg plot isn't big enough for them. They've done really well, and there are still 2 bags of earlies to get through yet. Most of the haulms are dying down now, so I emptied a bag of Desiree today, just to see how they had done. I was pleasantly surprised at the size of them. Some really big ones in there :)
Tomatoes are another matter though. There were a few Big Boy with blossom end rot on just the one plant earlier on, but this last week, I've had to cut out quite a few rotting leaves and fruits from the Moneymaker as well. The rest of them seem OK at the moment, and they are all cropping so it's not the end of the world. I only moved here at the start of the year, and never had the time to give the greenhouse a really good clean out. I think come the autumn, I'll have to clear it right out and give it a dose of Jeyes fluid. The last owner was here for 20 years, so there could be a build up of disease I suppose. In all the years I've been gardening, I've never had problems with tomatoes before, so hopefully next year will be better.
Cheers PJ.

I'm just off down the greenhouse. I won't be long...........

Hello all

Not done much at the lottie cos of the weather.....absolutly pouring down here.........again.

Little Andrew is now off his crutches and walking around although still not allowed any sports of any kind. He has to wait till he's seen the quack again in September to get the all clear.

The toms in the greenhouse are doing very well and i'm very pleased at how the garden part of the allotment has worked out. It will look as good as Grockies in a few years time.

Been going the beach with the dog a lot and playing with my new toy that I got for my birthday....a 10 mega pixel digital camera....got some great shots of the countryside around the beach and of the dog rolling in something he liked (still can't identify what it was...but he enjoyed himself)

Other than that, not a lot...... :?
Lots of love

Lizzie

Yes it was a very good programme, OH. Nice when quite a lot of 'veg' stuff is included.
What a great treat it was to listen to and watch a real expert like Joy Larkcom.

It was the first GW that I have enjoyed for a long time.....with loads of emphasis on the veggie front. Wish they'd stop the Joe Swift bit...the guy is really starting to irritate me with his attitude. He seems rather sharp and smug, to be honest.

I hope that Carol becomes the anchor of GW...she's more than up to the job, with Alys becoming a regular contributor.
Lots of love

I missed the programme last night. Thanks, John, for mentioning Joy Larckom. Made sure to watch it on BBC iPlayer straight away.It was a pleasure to see her. She has long been my inspiration. And it's good to remember that though she is now considered the expert on so many things vegeatble, in many ways she has always been radical and anti-accepted wisdom. But for her how many people would still be growing everything in straight, widely spaced rows, only eating lettuce and radish in the salad bowl, and just not know about Oriental vegetables?

I agree that Gardeners World is getting much more watchable. They have more real gardeners and I like the bits where we see the presenters' and other people's private gardens.
