Wow, that Wikpedia site is something
Only prob. is it contained more information that I really wanted to know
We have all of those animals around us, except rats. Deer and mice are especially prevalent and we have two dogs which we take into the forest every day. I guess I should watch out in case they start drinking from puddles etc.
I'm always a bit cautious about going to links but I guess Wikpedia is safe

In the UK the only animal that is cited as a problem for Weils is the Brown Rat.
They carry a lot of other diseases, wild one and especially sewer ones.

Apparently, there's a big problem with rats in canals... (So, the good people from fellow publication 'Towpath Talk' tell me) and they're all concerned about Weils too...

We are at the end of a navigation and a local man died from weils a few years ago, believed to have been a scratch on his leg being immersed in floodwater.
The problem is less the rat and more the humans providing so much discraded fast food and farm discards for them to eat.

I think another big problem is the amount of bird food that is put down, if the birds don't clear it all in the daytime, then it will encourage rats.

Tell me about it. I've had Environmental Health out a dozen times this year to try and deal with the rats hurtling around my garden because my neighbour insists on putting approx 2lb of bird food out each day. The warm weather is NOT helping as the young/old/lame are not being killed off by the cold. My (small) consolation is that these are coming off the nature reserve at the bottom of the garden and they're not sewer rats.
