I've done a planting map - no labels in the ground, just a rough sketch showing what's where and also where things are intended to be when they're done in the greenhouse.

I use plastic labels and pencil to mark. I always put the sowing date on each. At the end of the year I clean them all then before I remove the writing with an eraser I write all the crops and sowing dates in a diary that now has several years worth of sowings in. Easier than trying to make a note of each sowing as I do it through the year!
I find the same labels last years too!
