Still growing!



Dog realised I had nicked her tennis ball for scale - I guess these two are a bit close together and have given up and ripened. I'll try and untangle some vines and see how long they are.

My employers have decided that as I move PCs and monitors about the place I should go on a correct lifting course. Booked for 4th October so timing about right. We don't own bathroom scales so I'm going to have a problem with the weighing. Invite someone round, ask them to bring a set and then say while you are here ... ?

If you put them on any bathroom scales you'd have a problem as the pumpkin would cover up the digits.

I'm trying to work out how to get mine weighed. Any ideas anyone?

Simple and quick, make a little, but strong, wooden pedastal, which will not cover the digits and put the pumpkin on the scales on top of it.

Surreal, get a very strong jockey, weigh him on your bathroom scales, then get him to hold the pumpkin. Subtract weigh one from weight two.

Both the above assume your pumpkin(plus wood or jockey) does not exceed 20 stone, the typical weight limit on bathroom scales.

Simple. but you will need to find it.
Get an old fashioned set of scales, like "justice" holds, as well as a set of weights to go with it.

Very public, take the pumpkin down to Boots the Chemist , they often have scales where the readout is at waist heigh and it will give you a printout.

Friendly, chat up your GP or Practice Nurse and weigh it on the GP's scales.

Destructive, cut it up and weigh it a bit at a time.

Desperate and huge, public weighbridge.

You could simply stand on the scales and weigh yourself than stand on them again holding the pumpkin. Get the weight you need by subtraction. If your combined weights are more than 20 stone you still have a problem!!!

There is no way I can pick this pumpkin up. I'm strong but not THAT strong and I don't think my arms are long enough to go round it.

I have Seedling booked for help shifting it and possible John from the next plot too.

Much as I hate to admit it, I suspect the combined weight would be too much for the scales and that's more down to me than the pumpkin.

I'll have to think about this one...

last year we used talking scales.they worked fine

nice to see some excellent pumpkins growing, well done everyone.i'll post some pics of mine over the weekend,i have one which is currently estimated at 259lbs and still growing.the best way to lift them is to use a 8x6 taupaulin,cut the fruit away from the vine and roll it onto the layed out tarp.then 4 people get a corner each and can carry it easy to the scales
