Bad luck Pa Snip. You don't always get to be a successful Bill Gates or Steve Jobs at the first attempt. Why don't you experiment with something on a smaller scale first like a grape, or a blackcurrant and then the crinkles won't be so visible ?

Or you could make a virtue out of necessity and use some of that lovely black compost for making mud packs to smooth out the wrinkles. (Bake your tomato in its own little clay pot!) You just have to be a little more inventive!. Any of your surplus compost can be mixed with the weeds from your untidy neighbouring allotment plot to make Designer wattle and daub allotment huts. I'm sure there must be a market for them in the posher SW London areas!

Rather than introduce yet another material into the equation I think I might try the enterprise you suggest by baking the toms in a haybox.

As for wattle and daub allotment huts, might go for Yurts as they can double up as holiday lets when plot holders are not in regular attendance.

Could offer a true land experience week or fortnight for those who live in flats, could have that plot next door cleared in no time

If you did your plot will no longer work with Compost 1.0 and you'll need to update to Compost 3.5

Oh Peter have you not heard, compost 3.5 is crap, it has so many bugs it is on meltdown.

The good news is that there is a patch that can get me back to compost 1.01 v:4

3.45 am this morning was so dark yet the sunrise after was a beautiful colour later on.

Sadly the day hasn't lived up to the promise of the early morning and has turned out very grey and extremely windy.

Despite that I managed to get another raised bed made. 3 made, and under current plan one more to do, the plan will of course no doubt change at some point.

You are certainly a busy bee. You could house a whole family in that one Pa Snip!
You had better get them filled quickly before the wood snatchers come along and perloin it for a nice cosy chicken coop.

Put a roof on it, cut out a pop hole and you will have a perfect chicken coop.

Put a waterproof base in and they would come in handy here, biblical flood if it carries on much longer. Just been to the dentist and the rivers Wenning and Ribble are looking very busy.

Well being a mischievous troublemaker, I THINK THAT BIG BOX WOULD MAKE AN EXCELLENT CHICKEN COOP FOR YOUR BACK GARDEN :

and if Pa Snip does'n!t agree, i,m sure it would always substitute as a spacious doghouse for him. Or for any MP who doesn,t have a suitable pond on which to locate their Duck House. .

It would also make a nice lair for a cuddly fox...... that would solve the chicken problem.....
