Some strange shapes in the drifts outside the back door
...and near the greenhouse
So I walked to the village to see how bad it was. I was overtaken by a cross between a digger and a snowplough. When it got to a bad drift I took to the fields and took a picture looking back to our house, roof and chimneys about middle of picture. He didn't find an alien space craft when he finally dug through the drift.
It was a similar story the other side the village with a JCB toiling away.

I have been sawing up a new work top for the potting shed sink today....a job that has been in the pending tray for a while now....measured and marked up in our front room at home here..
...but I decided to do the circular sawing down the garden...
. and varnish the wood trim in the greenhouse, might be dry by June....
Much measure five times and cut once...so I hope it fits...and thank you to one of our loyal Volunteers for having a new kitchen fitted so that we could have the left over offcut..

Just popping out to show a prospective tenant a vacant plot. Think I'll take the dogs for a snowy walk after, might do a spot of something seasonal as well, perhaps carol singing?
Do not put off thanking people when they have helped you, as they may not be there to thank later.

I wonder if any turkeys that were left over from Christmas, start getting a little worried everytime we get some Christmasy weather.

This snow and bitter weather must be a real problem for farmers who are lambing and those whose livelihoods require them to work outdoors.. A bout of bitter weather for those of us who don't earn our living in this way is an inconvenience, but a real hardship for those who have no alternative. I always feel particularly sorry for the guys who get called out in the middle of the night to mend power cables when heavy snow brings the power lines down.

Feel like rushing outside - the sun has just come out!!!!!!
I've only just come indoors - wet through as I was trying to spray the conservatory roof to remove the snow and icicles before it brings the gutter down. I can't reach it from the ground with a pole so thought the jet sprayer might do the trick. It ran up my sleeves and sprayed over me and still hasn't moved much. Perhaps the sun will shift it if it stays out more than five minutes.

Primrose, just my sentiments about the farmers. It's been very hard going here for the last few months because the land was too wet for any vehicles and now this! The lambing is only just starting here but it's just as important to feed and look after the ewes before the lambs arrive and some of the fields are impossible to reach at the moment - still huge snowdrifts about (and more to come, they say).
I also worry about nurseries/garden centres. At the moment the plants, seeds etc should be flying off the shelves. but who will buy them? And next Sunday they are not allowed to open!

My other half has just come back in from having a quick smoke and tells me that more snow is falling. Just a little bit though. It's the biter, bitter cold that is getting to me now.

As i do gardening for a living, as a few others do on here too, the last twelve months have been a real struggle. I know i always make a joke about the weather but, things are getting a little tight. But as i've always been self employed since leaving school, and always worked outdoors, i know i will get through these slightly tough times.
Kind Regards, Old Herbaceous.

The road over to Gisburn is still closed this morning just a few cars seem to be getting through. The snow has blown off the fields and filled in the road. There is a lorry stuck and a few cars. Its very cold here this morning, I was hoping to do some work at the plot this morning but I think I might put it off till later in the week.
My seedlings are starting to get leggy, particularly the sweet peas. I am worried about putting them out in the cold polytunnel. I put them out in the mini greenhouse in the garden but then the weather got too bad so I brought them back in, maybe I should have left them outside.
I hope the weather gets better for you soon OH as I know how difficult it is when you are self employed.

We have some guys here this week replacing some fencing and having to dig holes for new concrete fence posts. The ground is still very hard and I worry about the concrete setting. It's miserable work for them. They may be keeping warm doing physical activity but the moment they stop they cool down and get chilled very quickly . And still the odd snow flakes trying to swirl around. Not nice !
.
It must have been a difficult year OH and very unpredictable when you are self employed. We really all do need some some warm sunshine on our backs too.

I'm feeling more and more guilty as I see the atrocious conditions affecting many of you in other parts of the UK, and the hardship suffered by so many. Here we had light rain last Friday, not a sign of snow, just that easterly wind which cuts like a well-honed carving knife and a degree or so of frost every night.
