How strange you should say that about your local councillor Lizzie. We have exactly the same situation in our ward which is LibDem. I have voted locally for them for years as they are just so good for us. We have three LibDems running our ward and they are just as Lizzie describes whereas the Tory and Labour candidates turn up on election week if then and the only leaflet you ever get is asking for votes, as opposed to the LibDem monthly newsletter. LibDem always win our ward by an overwhelming majority too, which says it all. I just wish nationally they could be the same

I don't know about nationally.

Personally, I think the government should be made up of the following:

2 Scouse Women
2 Glaswegian women
2 Lancashire women
2 Yorkshire women
2 Cockney women
2 from anywhere else.

That should sort the country out

Lizzie that sounds great, we haven't had a good civil war for years, and with that set up we could have several all at the same time.
Kind Regards, Old Herbaceous.

I'd have the Yorkshire women in the Treasury....that should make the country solvent.....

I'd have Grockie as PM. That would be fun...I can see it now.

"Excuse me PM, we think it would be good if....."

Gockie: "nah...bog off. has anyone seen my ciggies?"

Going now before i'm up in court for treason

An interesting comment article in the Times suggested a tax on excess children.

And here is my idea on that:

1st one you get with child benefits

2nd one you get no benefits at all

3rd+ Population burden tax

i was really miffed off when i read this post,
i have 6 children but both my husband and myself work to pay for them,
we are buying our own house and do not rely on benefits
my children have been brought up to respect their elders and know that if you want something in life you have to earn it.
we are on the extremely long waiting list for an allotment so we are growing stuff in the garden so the little ones can see where their food comes from and that it doesn't just appear on your plate.
i agree that there are lots of people have children for the purpose of what benefits they can get but please don't tar us all with the same brush.

Well said Anne. I was annoyed about the comments about fertility treatment as well. Most people having treatment are trying for a 1st or in my case 2nd child not a 7th or 8th. we paid for all our own treatment and both work to bring up the son we do have. The treament didnt work for us and doesnt for many people. Only about 20% of cycles work and result in a live baby - so this can hardly be a major factor in the population problems.
