Peter, I used to live saffron Walden, anywhere near you ? anyway there was a ? oldish bearded guy had set up home in the bushes by the side of the road that goes between Bishops Stortford and Saffron Walden, he had built a kind on corrugated metal shelter and usually had a fire going if he wasn't pushing an old pram along to the shops. I'd be amazed if he was still there, it was 20 years ago.

Just after the Chequers wasn't it?
He was still there a few years ago, the wood being much "decorated" and some locals had some sort of roster to take him hot food. Not sure if he is still there now though as I don't often go past the Chequers.

When I lived in Wolverhampton there was a guy who lived on the central reservation of the inner ring road for years. It was wide with bushes and trees. The story was that he'd been trapped in a collapsed building and wasn't going to risk it again. He had three 'rooms' and an open seating area complete with sofa and chairs.

He's still there. Each year the Council replace any items he needs. He even had a satellite dish up in a tree for a while! Interestingly, they have agreed to continue to support him living there for his lifetime, but they have a council ruling to prevent anyone else doing the same.

I think he was a refugee from the war.

That is interesting, I'd heard it might have been a bombed building he was trapped in, which would make sense.

I used to work in Housing Benefits and know that he had been offered a flat, but didn't want it because of his phobia. It's good to know that the council are caring for him in his situation. I know the post office delivered to him :) Big organisations can be flexible sometimes :)
