I am liking your idea of Azde / Spanish Hoe/ African hoe type tool. A good strong branch that you can make into a long handle with a piece of slate. Should prove to be a versatile tool.
Westi
early man mode !!! lol. I am thinking your origins are showing through. Liking your thinking

As you say, wrong Island lol.
Just the title of your chosen book makes it sound heavy going

Only thing I would question would be courgettes, how would you keep them once growing season is over.
I don’t think the island is going to give you year round production, so you are not going to be able to eventually make your fortune as a Courgette plantation shipping supplies to the UK.
BUT …I could be wrong.

A paddy field for rice needs some depth, lot of work involved there in order to dig one big enough to produce quantity
However it’s your call if you want that as part of your seed allowance

Perhaps you should explore further north east from your bases

Was a bit tongue in cheek, I'm fishing for more information about climate, so as you've not ruled it out, I'll cancel the rice as it's not a crop I know how to grow and will grow sweetcorn or maize instead.

Pa - it would appear to me you may have this sorted, you haven't shared your ideas yet, but note you are safely just the rescue party?
Here we are working hard with digging sticks, cold as you didn't make our island tropical, definitely starving as I for one couldn't catch a fish with a stick as don't understand refraction & stuff like that, but could learn if I have enough energy to keep trying. I'd still be trying to make a fire no doubt & I've got a few ideas on that, but whole island likely at risk if successful as too knackered to monitor. Rescue party though - now there is some protein at least!

So the new mag has just arrived in a bottle on my island and I'll use the mountain of sea weed I have and make lazy beds to plant my sweetcorn, beans and squashes along with tatties for my carbs. Fed up eating just fish I keep getting in my net, managed to find plenty of shellfish, crabs and birds eggs for protein. Could do with finding some fruit though, not found any yet whilst scouting and don't want to get scurvy.

westi.Seems to me you really have gone back to early man mode. I'm picturing a haute couture outfit of 3 leaves and a wooden club
Never mind Soya Beans for dinner, I need to warn the rescue party of how quickly you are showing cannibal traits
tigerburnieIt is possible that some melons have floated ashore.
It seems some spuds that I didn't know about have got through

As I suggested you should all head to the North east of your island, Let me know when you have reached the shoreline there.**********************************

You have conducted further exploration of your island
It appears to be granite formed and evidence suggests that whilst it is temperate there are some areas which would support sub tropical plant life

Well if it's sub tropical, there should be some fruit for vitamins, just hope its not Sea Buckthorn, unless some leather gloves float ashore. Thought you said there were some tatties floating around, at least that's what I thought I rescued and chitted lol. If there's no tatties, then I'll have to look for Reedmace roots to get my carbs.

Hi T.
I did say there were some potatoes floating around but that I thought saltwater had got to them. You seem to be doing well at finding things that are not ruined by salt water.
It's temperate, with some evidence of areas where sub tropical might grow. There may well be wild berrys, but I am no expert on which are edible and which are not, especially if they are of foreign origin. Who knows where the birds might have deposited seed from.
The islands last human inhabitants left in the mid 1800's
