thanks for the welcome, we have spread all the manure all over the plot about 2 inch deep (in old money) we are intending to leave it like that over winter then turn it all over i might be tempted to add a bit more as the soil is heavy and we can only go down about one and a half spades then hit clay, i think its the old puddling clay from when they built the sankey canal which is behind the allotments, one of the guys on the allotment has been on there for 17 years and says our plot has never been worked its only ever been used for dumping rubbish on says 3 people this year have walked away from it when it was allocated to them, that would explain all the bricks shoes glass asbestos and bit of cars we have uncovered, on the good side i planted some leeks about 4 weeks ago just to give a bit of colour to look at, they appear to be doing really well already 4 times bigger than when we planted them

robo. Don't despair, just plod on. Personally I would dig in the two inches now. Put another lot on next spring.

Absolutely freezing here this morning with the first proper frost of the Autumn

At least the first parsnips of the year should be nice and tasty for todays' dinner ......... that's if I can get them out of the ground that is

Very wet and cold here in the far-west with a strong SE wind pulling in some polar air but no frost. My dog gets a walk in-between the showers though I just spotted them coming up the lane, both wet but molly-the-dog isn't bothered. She's probably been jumping through all the muddy puddles, don't spaniels just love water and if she raises a pheasant in the stubble she's gone for ages and comes back in need of bath and rub-down.

I loved the photo of the gardening-gentlemen resting, I always feel guilty sitting down when there's still work to do, whats happening in the photo ?

Feeling sad - weather report said wet & wild so planned another day away from lottie. But turned out sunny & nice - after a very wet start I might add. Other half was out so thought I'd walk over to lottie - the path was flooded over my wellies so couldn't get there...had so much to do as well!

We made up a batch of compost today...We got 3 barrows of half inch riddled soil, 2 barrows of three quarter inch riddled leaf mould.....and then I went to get a bit of ground chalk and sand....both go through the riddle, the chalk to make sure it breaks up and the sand in case of any unwanted extras....

Then in the riddle I see a 2p coin...then I looked again...Roman coin

Thinks. ....the old Roman road is above the back of the local chalk pit...but I was puzzled, how had the coin survived the chalk crusher..??



Then I realised that the coin was only apparent when I had riddled the sand.




Then it dawned on me ..the sand that I was using was left over and gifted to us from the Lincolnshire Wolds Walking Festival event...and Heritage Lincs had a sand pit for folk to go looking for items in.....including I suspect repro Roman coins.

P.S. Of course it could have some scrap value

Far too cold to be doing anything outside today and so instead I'm counting Morrison vouchers and will then be 'shopping' for the gardening club out of the "Let's Grow" catalogue.

Being a small school I'm not expecting a huge total but 400+ would be useful, so fingers crossed

UPDATE: 548 vouchers so far and we might get a few stragglers. All the same a good result for the school x
