Lack of ripe tomatoes

I always raise a smile when I read recommendations to ripen your tomatoes off by "putting them in a drawer". Does ANYBODY ever have an empty drawer in their house to put tomatoes in? Ours are always crammed full with all kinds of stuff. But I suppose the idea is to put them in any kind of sealed container and jumbo plastic storage boxes with lids would work equally well?

My tomatoes were slow to start ripening but over the past week I've been inundated with them, both from the allotment and the greenhouse.

I have a tomato preserving weekend planned as rain is forecast, at last.
