Thanks for correcting me, JB. I didn't really mean to imply that ALL F1s were in the same bracket, but I was commenting generally on reasons why certain types of vegetables were grown for their predictability. As one who only grows for enjoyment, I will grow open-pollinated varieties happily, but I won't avoid F1s just because they are F1s and I know somew of them are very good. I have also experienced the problem of open-pollinated veg still coming to maturity when I want to put something else in that bed! And I know that not all the old varieties are good varieties; does anybody fancy growing the Lumper potato nowadays?
