Hi Brenjon,
If you note what I have done with my posting above. Click the Edit button at the top right of you posting then out line your address and hit the delete button. This is not the proper way but you will achieve what you need to do.

Hi Johnboy. Yes, we do let the soil/compost mix settle after watering and before sowing the carrot seed. We also Lightly spray the surface after sowing.....I'm glad we are doing it right! It was purely an idea we tried after our first attempt at growing carrots on this plot (6 years ago) produced some weird and wonderful shaped roots. Some folk on our site think it's "faffing about" and won't even try it but make a raised bed to grow their carrots in, year on year. Others simply don't grow them at all because "you can't grow carrots on this site"........eeeerm????

When the Doubting Thomases see your results it will take a couple of years for it to sink-in but they will eventually be telling everybody about the method they have evolved.
In the past I have dug a full spit, removing any stones as I go, before fetching out the V trench and I have had some wonderful results.
So you faff away and I'm afraid that you will have to put up with the super crop that you fellow allotmenteers will never get.

When we first got out plot my husband was told - "You'll never grow carrots on here lad!"

We tried the method just as an idea too and now use it with great success for parsnips in fact most seed we plant directly in the ground is subject to this method as clay soil isn't the best medium for germinating seed. The compost gradually imrpoves the soil structure - very gradually as not a lot is used but we have been adding it for quite a few years now.

Morning JB. After 5 years of using this method and getting excellent results (we too, use it for parsnips GLallotments) the same people are still saying that carrots won't grow on this site! Narrow minded or what? Well, it's their loss. We have shown a few new plot holders "our" method and at least two of them have tried it and been delighted with their crop.
I wish we had a smilie on here which blew raspberries......
