Favourite shop and why?

Very boring response, but I like our village shop and post office best. It's always busy but the young couple who run it are pleasant, very efficient and most people are on first name terms because they are locals, particularly in winter.

On a larger scale, I really enjoy going to Salts Mill in Saltaire with its quirky shops, including one with an amazing array of house and home bits (some horrendously expensive but good to look at), the very extensive book shop and, not least, Salts Diner, a noisy, busy restaurant. Salts Mill, a former textile mill built by Titus Salt around 1850 together with a complete village to house his employees, also houses the David Hockney Gallery and many books about him and reproductions of his works are for sale. One could probably spend a whole day there, looking, eating and shopping.

And I have often done so Monika. My father lived a few miles from there until recently, and introduced me to the delights of Salts Mill several years ago. My husband proposed to me in their French Cafe, too, so happy memories.

Another favourite shop of mine is our local butcher, where they sell proper meat, know what it is and how to cook it, and can get anything you want.

Was just wondering how much eveyone pays for their fish and chips.

Mine cost £4.00 for large cod and chips, what i think is good value.

Well that topic got everyone reminiscing about their favourite shop. I was also thinking about one hardware shop I used to go to when I was newly married years ago, a mere slip of a girl, it smelt of parafin and things (I love the smell of old hardware shops) and it sold knitting patterns dont know why but it did. I used to do a lot of knitting so would spend ages in there.

There is a very good old fashioned hardware shop in Nelson which has everything you could possibly want. It sells very reasonably priced grass seed by the kilo.

Oh and we pay £7.50 for fish and chips and a tub of curry locally, the young chap who runs it started his own business after learning his trade in another shop, now he is really busy. When we go in he remembers that I like a lightly battered fish and then wrapped in paper not in one of those dratted polystyrene boxes and we only go in about once a month. Thats service for you.

Clive just seen your post about body warmers. My OH bought a really nice body warmer from Asda for £10 it seems really good quality and it zips up to the neck.

My fish and chips were free... ...I provided the means of transport to get there..

My enquiries reveal that the actual cost was £5-50 which included a round of bread and butter but would be plus the mushy peas...

..and ref harware shops and parrrrafffin odour..our local one still obliges with such a heater just inside the door.

Somehow can't see me venturing to an Asda for a bodywarmer. ...it would involve me taking a trip to Boston.....as well as visiting a big store ...

Dear Catherine, waiting a whole year seems very harsh treatment, but so saying that, some things are worth waiting for, however long it takes.

I will try my hardest to behave, but what a challenge you have set me.

A fair price for the feast Clive, some of the fish and chip shops round here are up to £5.50 plus to take away.
