I rarely use my mobile and when I broke down on one occasion and phoned the AA, they said "Give us your mobile number and we'll call you back when the patrol man is on his way." Of course, I couldn't remember what the number was, so had to phone home and ask my husband what it was, and then ring them back. I bet somebody in the Call Centre was cussing and saying "Another bl**dy woman who doesn't know what her own mobile phone number is."
Probably a good security idea to put your mobile number into your phone book rather than writing it down and sticking it onto the phone in case it gets stolen, in which case the thieves will know what number it is if they want to use it for themselves. (How otherwise would they know how to use it for incoming calls?)

They might just phone one of their friends on the phone. The friend's phone would show them that phone's number - I think!
Not that I've ever tried it (stealing phones and getting the number like that, I mean) , honest.

They can easily find out anyway as most phones have my phone number area on the menu. It's just that to find it out I think you have to disconnect your phonecall.

Also as Mouse says if they phone a friend they can store the phone number of the person who phoned them. I've learned since the earlier days. I have rung people booking appointments and asked if they want my phone number and they just say that they have stored it.

By the way my husband uses the camera on the phone more than his phone he uses it on the plot with the date stamp on to records when he did everything and the stage at which plants are at on certain days. I do the same but prefer to use my ordinary camera as the images are a better quality and I can take wide angles and telephoto but the phone ones are pretty good.

ive had a mobile for several years... ive only ever given the number to the wife, kids and aged parents... the kids know i dont read texts... the others dont send them either ... the family's numbers and business contacts i want to talk to are in the memory so the phone identifies them on screen when they call...if an unknown number rings me i just dont answere it...nothing is that urgent that they cant leave a message on the home phone .... or write a letter....

Just thought re thieves finding the number of your mobile. They would just change the SIM card wouldn't they to change the number or they would (or the person they sold the phone to) have to put up with an irate owner calling them. Also if the phone was on contract they could be traced when they used it!!!

You can ring your mobile phone company and have stolen mobiles locked by providing the IMEI number usually found on your mobile phone battery or by typing #06# and send it will return your IMEI number to you, note it down and if stolen or lost. Phone the provider and get the actual phone blocked so it can not be used.

Elaine I agree with you I have a phone I know how to use, I ring out, I receive calls and txts,and send txts, but I could not do txt speak so I used to type it out in full, until recently when I started to do a few little words.

But it is my computer that I am struggling with. I used to work full time four years ago as a Office Manager in an Estate Agents and what I did not know about the computer system was not worth knowing about. Now four years later I am so woolly and have forgotton so much that I wish I had time to spend teaching myself everything again. I used to do spreadsheets, photos, word processing, Powerpoint and Access, without even thinking. Now sometimes I really struggle to do things, I have never downloaded music as it always worries me, and I have still never managed to put photos on this website of our garden etc.

I think as you get older your confidence disappears. Or, in my case probably thicker.

Have you used a photo storage site like Flickr or photobucket, Catherine? That is the way to get pictures onto this forum. I once tried to show you some oddly shaped custard marrows by pasting from my desktop, but the thing was over 1 mb or something like that. With Flickr, all you need to do is to put the URL [a number specific to the picture] from Flickr onto your post and anyone can access it from that.

My only problem is getting the Flickr site up and finding the uRL. I don't have the time for all that.
