Hi JB

The little square neat and even rows - I did shake the
plants regularly though. I like your idea will try that
next year as although not as bad as this year I never
get a great crop I must say.

I know one end was poor thanks to the mole but the
lot were pretty much a diaster. Do you think the fact I
put in a row of mini cobs (also rubbish) might have influenced
the result also?

Wish we could even have a poor crop of sweetcorn have had to abondon growing it as it seems to be the one crop which the badgers just cannot resist - they really are becoming a problem round here!!

Hi Westi,
What is not understood by many gardeners is that Sweetcorn is about the most hungry plant we grow and you need to use plenty of nutrition to grow successfully. So in order to get a really good crop next year you must start off with plenty of compost or FYM dug in about now to be ready for next years crop.

Just out of interest JB, does that mean that the many fields of maize that we see growing have had a hefty plastering with fertilizers, or don't they bother with the stuff grown for animal fodder?

Hi Colin,
Most Fodder Maize crops have a really hefty supply of FYM. After all the Maize is grown to feed mainly milking herds. It might well have an application of MM fertilizer depending what the Agronomist says.

I give it a good dose of chicken pellets and stuff when I prepare
the soil and then mulch it well but not manure as such - I have
just started working on my planting plan so will do as you suggest
when I figure where they are going next year.
