I use Facebook too. I find it fascinating the rubbish some folks put on their wall!! Alot of my "friends" are from work but I also keep in touch with relatives overseas. I like the games too.
I've never tried any of the other networking sites though.

Apparently thieves are taking advantage of facebook and other social networking sites as people are putting details of holidays and weekends away etc and their addresses and telephone numbers in their profiles. Some people have hundreds of 'friends' and they can't know all of them can they? Others allow their posts to by seen by friends of friends too.

It has sort of repercussions for forums such as this. I know we don't post addresses etc but people do mention holidays etc and anyone at all can access this information can't they. What are others thoughts?

I only joined Facebook because I had problems logging into the Zoo when they changed the format. Tour was coming up and I needed to keep in contact with my little playmates as, whilst I was in Dublin, I was meeting up with a lot of people for drinks, dinner etc and FB was the easiest and cheapest way of doing it.

For sending things like phone number etc, I gave it to one person via email, who then passed it on to someone else, etc etc, and they did the same with their numbers....hence no security lapses.

I only speak to people I know (as in have met in person) and do not talk about dates etc on the main page in my profile.

Some people are just daft and put their numbers for everyone to see so they deserve all the get really.

I'm with Chantal on this one. Quite happy to keep in touch with my friends in my own way, including their personal e-mail systems. It makes me smile rather ironically to read about how many people are complaining about the Government's intrusive stance on every aspect of our lives, but those same people are then all signing up for Facebook and Twatter (or whatever it is !!!).

I've been on a "social networking" seminar which assured me I would be gagging to get back to my computer and sign up to Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and who knows what else. I was told that it would be essential to post on all these at least three times a week, if not daily (or more in the case of Twitter) if I wanted a good following.

My only thought at the end of it all was "I don't need this, I have a life and I want to get away from computers and on to my allotment"

I know I post on here, but it doesn't rule my life!

I joined Facebook as in my job I needed to be able to give informed comments about social networking.

I was very sceptical but found that it was only as intrusive as it was allowed to be by the user. Like everything e.g. talking to a stranger on the bus – or contributing on a forum, it needs to be used sensibly. We don’t live in a bubble and give information out about ourselves all the time – for instance every time we use a mobile phone or our credit card we are open to intrusion.

Twitter was in fact the only way that information was got out of a country (Nepal I believe) to alert the world of atrocities being carried out there and so it isn’t all bad although personally I don’t like it.

We all have our interests and whether we let them rule our lives or not is really up to the individual. I know people who will not miss an episode of their favourite soap and won’t go anywhere or even answer the phone when it is on – but that is up to them surely.

We all think our way is best but in fact it is only really best for us. Must admit my limited use of Facebook has reunited me with people I had lost touch with. I only ‘talk’ to friends and even then don’t give out any sensitive information – just in case. I give out more information when placing an order online! When I first joined it all seemed a pointless exercise but things developed from there when people I knew started to get in touch.

By the way I have no problem with identity cards if they serve the purpose for which they are intended nor do I have a problem with CCTV if it keeps me safer than I would be without it.

I have a fb account, but I hardly ever go there!

I joined originally as friends moved to NZ, and it is easy to keep in touch that way. As a bonus, my best friend from school, who vanished over 20 years ago after her dad died, found me on fb and we've met up for a wee drinky. It was lovely! We email each other often, now fb has served it's purpose for us! She lives a long way away from me, so it's good to catch up on the pooter!

Hi everyone,

Yes, I'm on facebook. It's a great way to keep in touch with family in Australia and to chat with my group of friends from University all at once (without running up a big bill.... added benefit! )

Used wisely and with the correct privacy settings in place, I think it's a great way to keep in touch with people who you may not have chance to see as often as you'd like.

I have an open facebook group too called Premier Polytunnels Ltd... It is a global group which anyone can join and share their tips, advice and stories with fellow gardeners. Feel free to take a look!

'Premier' was considering joining Twitter too... But we'll see (never tried it before.)

I suppose I'm rather old fashioned but I don't like the idea of sharing my life with the world, but I do like this forum as it is like talking to friends while still being fairly anonymous. If that makes sense ... I probably don't understand the ins and outs of using Facebook or Twitter. It does seem to get "celebrities" into a lot of trouble from what I read in the newspapers, and there sounds to be rather a lot of hot air and banal rubbish. I imagine you have to be selective.
