For those good people who are keeping an eye on this topic, my beautiful cockerel has now gone to the breeder I have bought chicks from in the past. The lady threw him into a spacious run with a large number of hens - good for him I thought. But there were also a few other cockerels in there. In the five minutes I stayed watching him, he had as many skirmishes - but fortunately nothing serious. However, he didn't seem intimidated and started to crow a bit and eye up the females! I'm hoping he'll be OK and find a new owner rather than end up as the breeder's Sunday dinner!
As regards the farmer's dog, he has not appeared on the premises since I had a word with his owner. So, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
I have now bought three new hens (2 Warrens and a Black Rock) to keep my other cockerel happy and ease the pressure on my original three hens, who he is in the process of shredding!
Thanks to all for advice and concern.
