Last week: busy lizzies and tomatoes in propagator.

As we will have frost till mid March.. nothing outside.

-6C last week.

I've just sown some 4-year-old celery seed, to grow plants in the greenhouse. These will be germinated on a window-sill. Also some spring salad varieties, to follow the ones already germinated in my cold greenhouse.

just checked on my parsnips ,and there seems to be a fungi growing on the toilet rolls.is this normal and would it be safe to plant them out as they are??

I have got Swiss chard, tomatoes (5 varieties) Trial Cabbage (pre public release) jumbo pink bananna squash and butternut squash in my lounge and shallots and onions in pots in the cold frame. I will be starting my second lot of peas and broad beans next week

hi ive had fungi amd molds on the toilet rolls in previous years, it didnt seem to do any harm.

I'm going to sow my peas again today, as the mice have had all last week's efforts. I'm also going to sow some poison.

Then mixed salad, carrots, parsnips, beans and start off some flowers and bulbs too.

It's bright and sunny here now but not for long, I fear.

Hi Gowerbass come gardener,
When growing Parsnip in Loo roll inners you generally wait until four true leaves have formed and them plant them out as soon as you can after that.
The Fungi that you get is on the loo roll inner and will not harm your growing Parsnip. Once planted the fungi will not bother you at all.
I feel that you have been a little heavy handed with the water and the drainage at the bottom not quite all it should be. I plant 40 squared loo rolls to the standard seed tray and put a mixture of sharp sand and horticultural grit and stand the loo rolls on that and I also use a very small watering can (as used for house plants) and never saturate the whole thing just the top soil in the loo roll.

Busy autumn plus shed requirements, (see 'shed envy' thread), has meant that I am late. However in between catch up tasks:
Sowed 126 Mods of Red Brunswick onions & 126 Mods of Bedfordshire Giant onions begining of Feb.
Sowed True & Tender Parsnip into 34 kitchen roll inners, mix of sand and compost Mid Feb.
Sowed Witkiem Manita BB and Green Windsor on saturday.

Serious disaster with my spuds though. Placed them in my shed and missing the weather forecast, failed to protect with bubble wrap over night during the very cold snap. Result - 50% loss of tubers especially charlotte.

Heigh Ho, my forced Rhubarb is ready for some custard!!

Planted my Rocket potatoes today. Too windy to build the tunnel cloche over them so just put the sheet back over that I used to warm the bed, hope that's as warm as a cloche. Listening to the lunchtime wind forecast was pretty depressing so I decided I had better get them in.

Where do you put them? in the hole with the seed I guess Weed?

A neighbour has suggested that she should supply fresh ferret pooh, as this deters mice. Can't wait!

Gotta be worth a go Tigger I am losing 60/70 % of Broad Bean seeds to meeces, current crop is in peat pots and modules in the greenhouse.
