I am interested in the reference to garlic, as I wanted to grow some this year. If I were to start it in containers in my G/house how would you recommend i start?

Any ideas?

I know you can start off garlic in pots but I've only heard of it being done in November/December. Instructions for that time of year are:

Put one clove in each 4"-6" pot (in potting compost).

Stand pots in the coldest place you can find in your garden. Frost, snow, it all helps.

The root system will grow with little grown above ground.

Plant out in March trying not to disturb the roots too much.

Keep well watered in April and hope they dry out in May/June (opposite of 2007 weather )

Harvest as usual when the tops start to die back.

I don't know if it works as I've never tried it. You do need to get the bulbs really cold to enable to garlic to divide properly.

Try growing shallots in pots for use a picklers, they stay quite small and are thus an ideal size for the job.
