I agree to be cautious with pots and roottrainers, but saying that I have noticed no difference in peat pots, I don't use root trainers. but as I said earlier on in the posting, nature makes no discrimination as to which way she scatters seeds.

They grow where they fall if the ground is good enough.

It would not be natural for seeds to fall on the ground on end, on the side would predominate, but rootrainers are not natural. There is much in vegetable growing that is not natural.
