Hi Mike,
Probably as you would expect I do not subscribe to the philosophy of the Real Seed Company's on F1 Hybrids. In certain circumstances F1 Hybrids are fantastic but on Sprouts and Calabrese I feel that somehow the taste has suffered for holding and shelf life to the detriment of the taste. I simply would not eat the enormous F1 Calabrese that you find in the local Super Market because to me it tastes absolutely foul. I have had no need to buy a Brussels Sprout for donkeys years from anywhere.
I am not sure that green manure alone will really be enough nutrition for sprouts or any brassica as they are fairly hungry beasts.
Colin,
I have grown Wellington and they are very similar to Montgomery. What size are the Brilliant F1 Sprouts?
A friend of mine grows BridgeF1 and they seem to be quite a size but I have never tasted them. I do not like small sprouts and some of the F1 varieties are very small. I noticed some in the supermarket last Christmas they were not worth buying. What I do know is that Sprouts the other Christmas were 72p/lb and Frozen Turkey was only 68p/lb. I think that Sprouts will be even dearer this Christmas.
JB.
