Could be the Celery fly. They are fat and white whereas Leatherjacket grubs are more grey-brown.
Although they don't usually go for the bulb just the foliage which turns brown.

Yes, woodlice certainly, and I did remove the bottom leaves. Maybe not enough of them?

Thank you all for your replies. I think the problem I've had (apart from not removing lower leaves) is not following this advice i have just seen on the RHS thread.
Plant out 30cm (12in) apart in rows 40-45cm (16-18in) apart making sure not to bury the crown - the stem base should be at soil level.
I've planted them like all other seedlings, I didn't know I had to keep the crown above soil level.
