Wasps are not always so obliging where they nest.

Ours were in the paths. making it unavoidable not to disturb them.

Cannot resist adding my favourite wasp story to this thread. A friend of mine saw a certain undulation in his lawn and discovered there was a big wasps' nest down there. Aha, he thought, I shall burn the blighters. So he poured petrol into the nest entrance, put a rag on a stick, set fire to it, poked it into the hole and retreated. Moments later his lawn exploded leaving many dead wasps and a crater some six feet wide. A cautionary tale indeed.

Thanks to all for the other tips. Don't think I'll be taking up that last one.

The other thing wasps do is scrape wood to get sawdust to make their nest from. Listen from the end of the tunnel and if they're doing that you might hear the scraping sound. If they're not bothering you or in your way I'd leave them alone to get on with their lives.

Dear Jenny, are the wasps still there, or have they moved on.
Hope they didn't spoil your sunbathing yesterday. :)

A couple of years ago we noticed a wasps` nest on our next door allotment held by an old gardener, since retired. We told him about it and, to our horror, he fetched a hoe and started bashing the nest, shouting, "Clear off you b*ggers, clear off!" We beat a hasty, cowardly retreat but old Les seemed unhurt the next time we saw him and the nest seemed to be gone!

That's a braver man that I am - in many ways!

I just checked and the numbers have decreased - you can't hear them from 5 paces anymore. I think I'll leave it another couple of days.

Sunbathing would be a nice idea! In fact I was strimming the wild bit at the end of the garden, so couldn't even put a pair of shorts on.

I use parafin to burn out wasps: petrol is far too dangerous and short lived.

Calm down lads, calm down.
It was Herby who brought up the shorts suggestion.
You don't need much encouragement, do you?

At our age Jenny we can't afford to muck about
