Just got back onto the Forum after computer crash earlier in the year and log in problems.
I think it's good to get a bit over half way on day one. The M6 is the route to take and I agree that Tebay services are excellent. For an overnight stay I would consider Penrith or the Lake District a few miles West. If you go further Carlisle is an interesting old town and also home of Eddie Stobart. But it's always good to get over the border on the first day and I would reccommend Moffat - small attractive town just off the motorway. From there you will only be an hour and a half from Stirling with time to see the magnificent castle before going on to Perth (Dobbies garden centre just of the ring road)and up the A9 to Inverness.

We stopped at Tebay - exactly as you described folks. Tearoom overlooking duckpond was lovely. Farm Shop had lots of customers. Stayed in Windermere overnight wish we had had more time there. Oh well back to work and reality now.
